Times have not been going well for Manchester City. One win, one loss — the club is in a tough period and now they are about to face a major blow, as they are set to receive a penalty from the court.
The Premier League authorities had filed 115 charges against Manchester City, owned by the royal family of the United Arab Emirates, for breaching financial regulations (FFP). A hearing by an independent panel regarding these charges has concluded. It is speculated that if found guilty, Manchester City could face a points deduction of around 50. A website named ‘Slingo’ asked for the opinion of Dr. Rob Wilson, a professor at Sheffield Hallam University in England, regarding what could happen to Manchester City. Wilson stated, “It doesn’t seem likely that they will be relegated. I had initially estimated a points deduction of around 50. However, at that time, they were at the top of the Premier League table. Now, it seems likely that the deduction will be somewhere between 20 and 40 points.”
The Premier League authorities began investigating Manchester City in 2018, focusing on the period from 2009-10 to 2017-18. The investigation also included allegations of lack of cooperation. If the charges are proven correct, it would indicate that Manchester City violated the rules. Many speculate that if found guilty, Manchester City’s titles won during that period could be stripped away. In such a case, the teams that finished second in those competitions could potentially be declared champions. Additionally, Manchester City could face relegation to the Championship (the second tier) along with a potential ban.
In the winter transfer window, Manchester City has brought in several players and even renewed their contract with Erling Haaland until 2034. This suggests that it may not be immediately relegated to the second tier. However, a significant number of points could be deducted, which might prevent the team from participating in UEFA competitions next season. Currently, in the 2024-25 Premier League season, Manchester City is in fourth place with 41 points from 12 wins, 5 draws, and 6 losses in 23 matches.
Liberty News sports correspondent reports that the Champions League group stage match between Manchester City and Club Brugge will kick off at 2 AM Bangladesh time tonight. The match, which will take place at the Etihad, is crucial for City. With 8 points from 7 matches, Pep Guardiola’s team is currently in 25th place in the points table. If they fail to stay in the top 24, they will not qualify for the play-offs either.
