In Rajshahi, potato farmers are protesting the increase in cold storage rental fees by throwing potatoes onto the streets and holding a sit-in demonstration. The protest is a response to the hike in storage fees, from 4 to 8 taka per kilogram.

They started this program at Mohanpur Upazila Parishad square around 11 o’clock on Sunday (February 2).

Farmers told Liberty News’ local correspondent that they had to pay 4 rupees as rent per kg of potatoes. Recently, it has been increased to 8 by the owners of cold storage. They announced that they would continue the sit-in program if the rent of potato storage was not reduced.

Later, the farmers protested by blocking the highway and throwing potatoes on the road.
