In response to President Donald Trump’s tariff threats, India has reduced import duties on motorbikes, particularly benefiting Harley-Davidson, as part of its effort to prevent further trade disputes.

India recently slashed import duties on motorbikes, including American brand Harley-Davidson, as a defensive move against tariff threats from President Donald Trump. The duty on heavy bikes (over 1600cc) has been reduced from 50% to 30%, while smaller bikes now face a 40% import duty instead of the previous 50%. Analysts believe this move is aimed at avoiding further tariff impositions by the Trump administration, particularly after Trump’s return to the White House, where he has been targeting trade imbalances with both allies and rivals.

Harley-Davidson has been one of the largest beneficiaries of India’s trade with the U.S., exporting $30 million worth of bikes last year. Despite previous high tariffs on foreign motorcycles, India’s government has shifted its stance following Trump’s pressure.

Liberty News’ international correspondent states that, India has also removed import duties on satellite ground installations and reduced tariffs on various chemicals and fish by-products. India hopes these tariff cuts will improve its trade relations with the U.S. amid ongoing pressures. However, experts are unsure whether Trump will be satisfied with these changes or continue to pursue further commercial actions.
