A six-member delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami has begun a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasiruddin and other election commissioners at the Election Commission office.

The meeting commenced at 10 AM on Thursday at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, led by Jamaat’s Secretary General, Professor Mia Golam Parwar. The delegation includes Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General A.H.M. Hamidur Rahman Azad, President of the Bangladesh Lawyers’ Council and Jamaat Central Executive Member Advocate Md. Jasim Uddin Sarker, Advocate S.M. Kamal Uddin, member of Dhaka South City Jamaat’s Executive Council, and Deputy Attorney General of the Supreme Court, Advocate Md. Yusuf Ali.

Liberty news political correspondent states this meeting comes after the Election Commission, under the leadership of K.M. Nurul Huda, canceled Jamaat’s registration before the 11th National Parliament elections. On October 28, 2018, the then EC Secretary Md. Helaluddin Ahmed signed a gazette notice stating that Jamaat’s registration, granted on November 4, 2008, was invalid following a High Court ruling in 2013 that declared the registration process illegal. Consequently, the Election Commission annulled the party’s registration.
