Criminal activity in Bangladesh has escalated, with robbers and muggers becoming increasingly reckless, leading to a 50% rise in cases of robbery and theft over the last six months.

In recent months, criminals have shown a blatant disregard for safety, attacking individuals with firearms or sharp weapons, and robbing them of their possessions. The latest incident occurred on Sunday night in Banashree, Dhaka, where a gold trader was shot and hacked, and his jewelry was stolen. The shocking video of the attack quickly spread on social media, amplifying public fear and anxiety.

According to police statistics, robberies and muggings have sharply increased. In January, 242 cases of robbery and theft were reported, marking a 69% increase compared to the same month last year. Similarly, in December, 230 cases were filed, a 70% rise from the previous year.

Between August 2023 and January 2024, a total of 1,145 cases were filed, 382 more (50%) than the same period the previous year.

Liberty News’ crime correspondent states that crime analysts argue that official data may not fully reflect the actual situation, as many victims avoid reporting incidents due to fear of complications. In some cases, police have recorded general diaries (GDs) for lost valuables instead of filing cases. However, law enforcement officials have stated that they no longer hesitate to register cases, contributing to the increase in reported incidents.
