A disturbing video has gone viral on social media, showing a man armed with a machete calmly walking past traffic police moments after allegedly mugging a pedestrian near Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka.

The video, shared in the Facebook group “Traffic Alert,” captures the man snatching a bag from a passerby and then walking away casually. Traffic police officers were seen nearby but did not intervene.

Eyewitness Rakib Hossain, who recorded the footage, told The Business Standard on Thursday (18 July) that the incident occurred near the Dhanmondi 32 lake area the previous night. “I was stuck in traffic when I saw the incident. The muggers seemed to work in coordination—they acted like they were fighting among themselves to confuse people and then targeted someone. When a man tried to intervene, they attacked him and stole his belongings,” Rakib said.

Assistant Police Commissioner of the Dhanmondi Zone under the Ramna Division, Shah Mostafa Tariquzzaman, told reporters that police responded quickly after being alerted by pedestrians. “We searched the area but couldn’t locate either the victim or the armed suspect,” he said.

He added that law enforcers have since collected CCTV footage of the incident and assured that a full investigation is underway to identify the culprits and take proper action.
