A newborn baby girl, found abandoned near a roadside in Kurigram’s Bhurungamari upazila, has been reunited with her mother after two days, thanks to the efforts of local police and administration.
A heartwarming reunion unfolded in Bhurungamari upazila of Kurigram on Saturday, as a newborn girl, found abandoned two days earlier, was finally returned to her mother with the support of local authorities.
The infant was discovered on Friday morning near a Banglalink tower by a local couple, Milon Mia and Asmaul Hosna, who heard the baby’s cries beside their home’s washroom. They immediately rescued the baby and handed her over to Bhurungamari police. A general diary (GD) was filed, and the child was admitted to Bhurungamari Upazila Health Complex for care.
News of the discovery spread through media reports, eventually reaching the baby’s relatives. That same night, the baby’s step-uncle informed the mother, Jahanara Begum, about the incident. Around 2:00 AM, Jahanara contacted the police.
Investigations revealed that Jahanara, a resident of Baksir Khamar area in Nageshwari upazila, had given birth to the girl on May 17. Her husband, Nur Mohammad, who reportedly suffers from mental instability, left the newborn near Asmaul Hosna’s house in Bhurungamari without informing anyone. It was later learned that Jahanara and Asmaul are cousins.
Dr. Abu Sazzad Mohammad Sayem of Bhurungamari Upazila Health Complex confirmed that the baby was in good health and was handed over in the presence of police and social services officials.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhurungamari Police Station, Al Mahmud, stated that the handover was completed following proper legal procedures, ensuring the child’s safe return to her mother’s arms.
