Acting headmistress assaulted at Adarsha High School

Onik Khan,Dhaka: An acting headmistress of Adarsha High School in Mirpur-10 was allegedly assaulted and confined by a group of students on Tuesday (September 16), amid a long-standing dispute over the headteacher’s post.

According to school sources, the incident took place around 11:30 am after regular classes had ended. Several students intercepted Acting Headmistress Rubiya Khatun, blocked her path, and forcibly confined her in a classroom, demanding her resignation. During the confinement, the students reportedly chanted vulgar slogans and beat drums, making derogatory remarks. She was released after nearly three hours when law enforcement, with assistance from an army patrol team, intervened and rescued her.

The school has been grappling with internal conflict for years over the headteacher’s position. On June 28, 2025, the ad hoc committee suspended then acting headteacher Nure Alam on allegations of financial irregularities and misconduct. Rubiya Khatun was appointed as acting headmistress on the basis of seniority.

However, authorities claim that Nure Alam never formally relinquished the post and has refused to hand over responsibility to his successor. Instead, he allegedly instigated certain teachers and students to mount pressure on Rubiya Khatun to step down.

Ad-hoc committee president Kabir Hossain told The Daily Star, “For the sake of the school’s reputation, political activities have been banned on campus. It is urgent to appoint a permanent headteacher. Nure Alam has been involved in various irregularities. Provoking innocent students into such acts is extremely harmful for the future.”

Nure Alam faces allegations of misappropriating around Tk 3 crore from school funds in the name of legal expenses, as well as illegally leasing school land for personal financial gain.

Despite repeated attempts, Nure Alam could not be reached for comment.
Authorities suspect that Tuesday’s incident was directly or indirectly fueled by Nure Alam’s instigation. Law enforcement agencies said an investigation is underway, and those involved in the assault will be identified and brought under the purview of law.
