The claim that documents related to the Sagar-Runi murder investigation were destroyed in a fire is inaccurate, said Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf on Tuesday, dismissing recent media reports.

Addressing reporters in Dhaka, Arshadur Rouf confirmed that the investigation into the 2012 murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi has been granted a six-month extension by the High Court. He clarified that no official has stated that case files were burned. “Some media outlets are misreporting. What was actually said is that most DB officers have been transferred, so retrieving old documents is taking time,” he explained.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) also issued a special statement denying reports that key documents under Detective Branch (DB) custody were lost in a fire. Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, reaffirmed that no files had been burned.

On Tuesday, the High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Shikder Mahmudur Razi granted the extended time for investigation following a state petition. Additional Attorney General Rouf represented the state, while Advocate Shishir Monir stood for the petitioners.

The high-profile double murder has remained unsolved for over a decade, and public pressure for justice continues to mount.
