Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Thursday commended the police for their bravery during an anti-narcotics operation in Dhaka’s Fakirapool area, where three suspected drug traffickers were detained after an exchange of gunfire.
“The police acted with great courage. Even after being shot at, they managed to arrest three suspects and seize drugs and a vehicle,” the adviser told reporters after visiting injured officers at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
An assistant sub-inspector sustained a bullet wound to the abdomen, though doctors confirmed it missed vital organs and said his condition is stable. Another injured constable, who was shot in the leg, is being transferred to Rajarbagh Police Hospital for further treatment.
Police seized 9,000 yaba pills during the operation. Acting on a tip-off, detectives from the Lalbagh Division had set up a checkpoint targeting a vehicle coming from Chattogram. When signalled to stop, the vehicle attempted to flee and opened fire, injuring three officers.
The adviser said law enforcement will use necessary weapons to carry out their duties and instructed authorities to ensure proper medical care for the injured.
