A new story, a new spark of hope, following Hamza, it’s now Samit Som! Born and raised in Canada, this 27-year-old midfielder has felt a deep connection to his Bangladeshi roots despite building his football career abroad. And now, the long wait is over, Samit has officially expressed his desire to don the red and green jersey of Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has confirmed Samit’s interest, and preparations are already underway to process his Bangladeshi passport. The target is set: Samit’s potential debut on June 10 in Dhaka against Singapore in the Asian Cup qualifiers. BFF is actively working to complete all formalities to make that happen.
Currently playing for Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League, Samit has previously represented Canada at the U-20, U-21, and even senior national levels. As a result, FIFA’s official clearance will be required for his switch, but BFF remains optimistic that the process will go smoothly.
Following in the footsteps of Jamal Bhuiyan and Tariq Kazi, Samit is the latest addition to the growing trend of diaspora talents returning to represent Bangladesh. Recently, Hamza Choudhury’s historic debut in the English Premier League ignited excitement among fans across the country.
Samit wants to be a part of that fire. He has also shown keen interest in the national team’s future plans. With the clock ticking and formalities in motion, his potential appearance against Singapore could mark yet another major milestone in Bangladesh football’s journey.
Now, the dream of wearing the red and green lives in Samit’s eyes too. All that remains is the sound of the referee’s whistle, signaling the beginning of a new chapter, another overseas star ready to shine for Bangladesh.
