Metro rail operations resumed on the Agargaon-Shahbagh section on Thursday morning after overnight repair works addressed risky issues.
Earlier at 9:15pm on Wednesday, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL), the metro rail operating company, suspended train movement on the route after noticing trembling at a portion from where two bearing pads got displaced three days earlier. New bearing pads were later installed, but the process apparently required more safety checks.
Despite the halt on Agargaon-Shahbagh route, train movement continued uninterrupted on the Uttara-Agargaon and Shahbagh-Motijheel routes until the scheduled closure at 10:10pm on Wednesday.
On Sunday noon, a pedestrian named Abul Kalam Azad, 36, was killed when a bearing pad, weighing at least 140 kilograms, fell on him from the Farmgate metro rail station.
Two others were also injured in the incident. Train movement was suspended at all metro stations. About seven hours later the Uttara-Agargaon route was reopened, followed by the reopening of Shahbagh-Motijheel route.
The Agargaon-Shahbagh route remained suspended till 11am the next day. The route was reopened after trial runs, but for the past three days trains slowed down near Farmgate to avoid risks.
In September last year, a bearing pad got displaced from the Farmgate metro station – the first such incident. Fortunately, the mishap did not cause any casualties.
Earlier, BUET officials raised concerns over the quality of the bearing pads used in the metro rail. However, the metro rail authorities and others under the then fascist Awami League government did not address the concerns.
A bearing pad is installed at the junction of a pillar and the deck that carries the metro train. They are made from reinforced elastomeric rubber to help absorb the weight of incoming trains, and limit frictions during train movement.
