Defying restrictions, Israeli extremists once again stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Jerusalem Day, attacking Palestinians and chanting anti-Arab slogans, reports Al Jazeera.
On Monday (May 26), far-right Israeli groups entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during a march marking ‘Jerusalem Day’. According to Al Jazeera, nearly 2,000 Israelis, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, participated in the incursion, breaching long-standing agreements regarding the site.
Videos circulating on social media platform X showed Ben-Gvir entering the mosque grounds with other ministers, praying for “victory in the war and the return of hostages from Hamas.”
During the “Jerusalem March”, Israeli participants reportedly marched through Muslim quarters of East Jerusalem, chanting inflammatory slogans like “Death to Arabs” and “Burn your settlements.” Many marchers were settlers from illegal Jewish outposts in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
The UN and other international bodies consider East Jerusalem occupied Palestinian territory, and Israeli activities in the area are widely regarded as violations of international law.
Despite Israeli police deployment, marchers also attacked the UNRWA headquarters. Protesters, including MP Yulia Malinovsky, stormed the compound with police standing by, according to UNRWA West Bank Coordinator Roland Friedrich.
Several videos also showed Israeli youths harassing Palestinian shopkeepers while waving Israeli flags. AFP reported that at least two individuals were arrested in connection with the assaults.
Though Israel’s Supreme Court has upheld the ban on Jewish prayers inside Al-Aqsa, repeated violations by Israeli officials have drawn widespread condemnation, raising concerns over escalating tensions in the region.
