BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that due to the “suicidal decision” of the Awami League, Bangladesh is still deprived of its fair share of the Ganges river water.
In a statement issued Thursday night marking the historic “Farakka Day” on May 16, Fakhrul said the day represents a significant chapter in Bangladesh’s national movement. He recalled how, 49 years ago, millions of people responded to the call of the late leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and marched toward the Farakka barrage in protest against India’s unilateral withdrawal of Ganges water.
He said India constructed the Farakka Barrage to divert the Ganges water, which turned Bangladesh’s northwest region into an arid zone.
The BNP leader accused the then Awami League government of allowing the experimental opening of the barrage without public consensus, ignoring environmental and humanitarian concerns. As a result, he said, the barrage remains operational to this day and has become a “death trap” for Bangladesh, leading to ecological imbalances, water shortages, and environmental degradation.
Fakhrul added that Maulana Bhashani’s visionary leadership helped draw international attention to the issue, turning it into a global concern. He further warned that India’s construction of multiple dams on 54 transboundary rivers threatens Bangladesh’s existence, as the country is showing signs of becoming barren and infertile.
