Alexander Lukashenko has won his seventh presidential election, securing his position as Belarus’ leader for another five years. The long-serving president, who has been in power since 1994, triumphed with an overwhelming 86.82% of the vote, according to the Central Election Commission. No other candidate received more than 5% of the vote, confirming Lukashenko’s continued dominance in the nation’s political landscape.
The election, held on Sunday local time, has officially extended Lukashenko’s rule until 2030. He remains the first and only president in Belarusian history to be elected seven times.
Liberty News’ international correspondent reports Lukashenko first came to power in 1994, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Belarus’ independence. Since then, he has maintained a tight grip on the country, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in Europe. Despite criticism over electoral fairness and allegations of political repression, Lukashenko has managed to hold onto power, continuing to shape Belarus’ political and economic trajectory.
