Authorities in Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir have ordered the closure of all madrasas for 10 days amid escalating tensions with India and fears of potential military strikes.

Amid rising geopolitical strain between India and Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack, a government notice on Thursday announced the temporary closure of all Islamic seminaries in Azad Kashmir. Officials cited national security concerns, warning of a possible strike by Indian forces targeting religious institutions in the region.

While Pakistani government officials have publicly attributed the closure to extreme heat and a prevailing heatwave, local sources and administrators suggest otherwise. “In the current climate, there is a real threat that religious schools could be targeted. This decision was made as a precaution,” said Hafiz Nazir Ahmed, Director of Religious Affairs for Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.

The shutdown follows heightened hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors after a deadly assault in India’s Pahalgam region claimed 26 lives. Although New Delhi has not formally blamed Islamabad, it has responded with swift diplomatic and strategic actions—canceling visas for Pakistani nationals, expelling diplomats, and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty.

The closure of religious institutions underscores the fragility of peace in the region and the growing fear of conflict spillover into civilian domains.
