Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has affirmed that the decision to prohibit all political activities of the Awami League was made after thorough discussions with every major party.
Speaking at the “Meet the Reporters” session hosted by the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Monday, Alam noted that while minor differences may exist, the ban enjoyed broad acceptance. “We spoke with all parties,” he said. “Any objections are natural, but the decision reflects collective support.”
Citing a United Nations report that documented some 1,400 killings during the July–August protests, Alam argued the true toll was closer to 2,000 when including enforced disappearances. “Over the past 15 years, the Awami League has looted state resources, carried out abductions and killings. More than 3,500 people vanished,” he stated, calling these violations grounds for the ban.
When asked why the interim government acted nine months after taking office, he pointed to sustained global pressure following the protests. “The UN’s human rights commission report on the government’s crackdown created international support. The ban has brought relief across the nation.”
On whether allied parties within the AL-led 14-party coalition or the Jatiya Party would face similar measures, Alam replied that the UN report specifically detailed human rights abuses by the Awami League leadership, not other parties. “All killings and disappearances occurred under Sheikh Hasina’s orders,” he asserted.
Alam also rejected suggestions that Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus benefited personally from institutions bearing his name, such as Grameen University or Grameen Employment Agency. He challenged critics to produce evidence of Dr. Yunus’s shares or undue influence in licensing. Detailing licensing delays under previous administrations, he explained that recent approvals followed thorough audits.
The session was attended by DRU President Abu Saleh Akn and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel, among other media professionals.
