The Appellate Division has temporarily stayed the High Court’s ruling that canceled the appointments of 6,531 candidates selected for Assistant Teacher positions in government primary schools in Dhaka and Chittagong divisions.

On Monday, the Appellate Division, led by Senior Justice Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam, suspended the High Court’s decision that had canceled the government’s decision to issue appointment letters to 6,531 candidates who had passed the assistant teacher exams for government primary schools in Dhaka and Chittagong divisions.

The case was scheduled for a hearing on March 2, following the High Court’s verdict on February 18, which halted the recruitment process. The government had initially published the final results of the third phase of recruitment for assistant teachers in these divisions on October 31 of the previous year. The results, posted on the Directorate of Primary Education’s website, listed 6,531 successful candidates.

Liberty News’ court correspondent states that a writ petition filed later led the High Court to suspend the recruitment of these candidates for six months on November 19, 2023. The Primary Education Department filed an appeal with the Appellate Division, seeking to lift the suspension, and after a final hearing, the court issued a stay on the cancellation, allowing the recruitment process to proceed. The High Court had previously instructed that appointments be made based on merit.
