In 2017, an Argentine court issued international arrest warrants against Myanmar’s military chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, and ousted, house-arrested leader Aung San Suu Kyi for their roles in genocide and crimes against humanity against the Rohingya.

The court issued the warrants last Thursday, also naming former President Htin Kyaw, two other civilian leaders, and 22 military officials. However, Myanmar authorities have criticized the warrants. The ruling came in response to a case filed in Argentina by a Rohingya advocacy group.

Regarding the arrest warrants, junta spokesperson Zaw Min Tun stated that Argentina and Myanmar have no ties. He suggested that Argentina should focus on filling its judicial vacancies before criticizing Myanmar, citing a past report indicating Buenos Aires needed 150 judges across all levels of its judiciary.

Liberty News’ international correspondent reports that the arrest warrant identifies Aung San Suu Kyi’s role as State Counsellor from 2016 to 2021. During that time, she failed to take practical and effective measures to stop the persecution of the Rohingya, drawing widespread global criticism.

Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating Min Aung Hlaing for alleged crimes, while the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is examining genocide charges against Myanmar.
