Bangladesh Army has played a pivotal role in maintaining law and order over the past two months, arresting thousands of offenders and recovering a massive cache of illegal weapons nationwide, according to Military Operations Directorate Colonel Md. Shafiqul Islam.
Since August 5, the Bangladesh Army has arrested 7,822 individuals involved in various crimes including drug trafficking, extortion, abduction, robbery, and membership in juvenile gangs. Of these, 2,457 were detained in coordinated efforts with other law enforcement agencies.
During nationwide drives, the army recovered 9,370 illegal weapons and 285,052 rounds of ammunition. Additionally, they neutralized 232 violent incidents — including 76 political clashes, 37 educational unrests, and 24 public office-related disturbances.
In industrial zones, troops defused 137 volatile situations and cleared 31 key roads from blockades. On April 9, 24 army personnel were injured during unrest at Robin Tex Garments in Narayanganj, where soldiers were struck by projectiles.
To ensure peaceful Eid celebrations, the army launched a two-week special security operation before and after the holiday, securing highways, bus terminals, train stations, and launch terminals. This effort significantly reduced crime and road accidents compared to previous years.
In response to the students again movement, the army facilitated medical treatment for 4,340 injured students at Combined Military Hospitals (CMHs). On March 23 and 25, they organized an Iftar and a reception for wounded students and bereaved families.
Troops also responded swiftly to major fire incidents across Chattogram, Savar, Badda, Mirpur, Banani, Vashantek, Gazipur, Patuakhali, and Bagerhat, minimizing casualties and property loss through joint operations with the fire service and police.
In parallel, the army ensured security during Pahela Baishakh festivities and safeguarded foreign diplomats and embassies. Their responsibilities also include maintaining peace in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and security in the FDMN camps of Cox’s Bazar.
On March 14, UN Secretary-General António Guterres visited the Rohingya camps and praised the army for providing tight security and organizing Iftar for nearly 100,000 refugees. The Army Chief also met with the UN chief during the visit.
Furthermore, in the wake of devastating earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand, the Bangladesh Army led a humanitarian mission. Under Colonel Shamim’s command, a 21-member engineering team and a 10-member medical unit were deployed, alongside personnel from the navy, air force, and fire services. They returned to the country on April 15 after completing relief efforts.
