In a late-night raid, the Army apprehended three top criminals, including gang leaders, from the Khilkhet Bazar area in Dhaka on charges of extortion, drug trafficking, land grabbing, and robbery.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Shahidul Islam Khokon, Md. Helal Uddin, and Md. Abdur Rahim. According to military sources, they had long been involved in extortion and various criminal activities in Khilkhet, establishing dominance through fear and violence.
The operation was carried out on Sunday night by members of the 6 Independent AD Brigade under Uttara Army Camp, based on a tip-off. The sudden raid created brief tension among locals in the Khilkhet Bazar area, but the situation was quickly brought under control by the military personnel.
A press release from the Bangladesh Army revealed that Khokon has at least eight cases filed against him and was notorious for collecting daily extortion money from local business owners. Notably, Khokon and Rahim had been arrested in similar operations on September 24 last year and again on April 22 this year, but were later released on bail.
During initial interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to their criminal activities. They have since been handed over to Khilkhet Police Station for further legal proceedings.
The arrests mark a significant step in curbing organized crime in the capital’s outskirts, particularly against rising teen gang activity and land-related violence.
