In a move to ensure transparency and counter misinformation, the Bangladesh Army has released the complete list of 626 individuals who sought refuge in various cantonments during the volatile period following the July-August mass uprising.
Following the collapse of the previous government amid the July-August mass movement, law and order deteriorated drastically due to the actions of certain conspiratorial groups. This led to a series of violent incidents, including attacks on government offices and police stations, arson on homes of political leaders and activists, mob justice, theft, and looting, creating a climate of widespread insecurity.
In this context, many citizens—fearing for their lives—sought temporary shelter in cantonments across the country, including in Dhaka. The army stated that during this emergency, saving lives took precedence over verifying the identities of those requesting refuge.
According to an official army press release, a total of 626 people were temporarily sheltered in cantonments. Among them were 24 political figures, 5 judges, 19 civil servants, 515 police personnel, 12 individuals from various professions, and 51 family members (wives and children). Their stay was described as brief, with most leaving within one to two days as the situation improved. Five individuals were later handed over to law enforcement based on existing legal charges, following due legal procedures.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had already issued a press statement on August 18 last year, along with submitting a partial list of 193 individuals to the Home Ministry, excluding 432 police personnel and one NSI member. This new release includes those names, completing the full list.
The army clarified that the shelter was provided on purely humanitarian grounds to prevent extrajudicial killings, not to shield anyone from justice. It also condemned what it described as deliberate attempts by vested quarters to mislead the public and tarnish the army’s image.
The statement urged citizens to remain cautious against misinformation and reaffirmed the army’s commitment to professionalism, dedication, and standing by the nation while safeguarding sovereignty.
