A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against popular actress Meher Afroz Shaon in a case filed by her stepmother, alleging physical assault on her and Shaon’s father.
The First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka issued the arrest order on Tuesday after Shaon failed to appear in a case lodged by her stepmother, Nishi Islam. The complaint accuses Shaon of physically assaulting her father, engineer Mohammad Ali, as well as Nishi.
The case also names 12 other individuals, including former Detective Branch (DB) chief Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid. Two police officers from Badda Police Station, who appeared in court, confessed to detaining and assaulting the complainant under instructions from the then Officer-in-Charge.
Due to the absence of Shaon and several co-accused in court, the magistrate issued arrest warrants against them.
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Nishi Islam expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision. “Shaon has used her influence throughout this case. We were beaten, harassed. We now want justice,” she said.
