A renowned artist in Manikganj has become the target of violence after creating a Boishakhi motif, falsely rumored to resemble a political figure. Miscreants allegedly set fire to his home, raising serious concerns about freedom of expression.
In the early hours of Tuesday night, the residence of artist Manbendra Ghosh in Ghosher Bazar, under Garpara Union of Manikganj Sadar upazila, was partially destroyed in a fire allegedly set by unidentified attackers. Family members claim the incident was a deliberate act of arson, following rumors surrounding a cultural artwork.
Ghosh recently designed a tiger-themed motif for a Mangal Shobhajatra rally in Dhaka, intended to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year. However, local rumors inaccurately alleged that the figure resembled the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. It is believed that this misinformation fueled the attack.
“I only created a symbolic tiger, a representation of our cultural heritage,” Ghosh said. “I had no intention of depicting any political figure. My family now feels deeply unsafe. I urge the authorities to take immediate action.”
Manikganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aman Ullah visited the site and confirmed that the matter is being treated with high importance. Legal procedures are currently underway.
The artist’s home is located near that of former Health Minister Zahid Maleque, prompting speculation that the attack may have been politically motivated or triggered by false assumptions.
Cultural activists have condemned the incident, calling it a direct threat to freedom of expression and artistic liberty. They demand swift justice and strong action against those responsible.
