Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has expressed the view that local government elections should be held prior to the national elections, although the National Consensus Commission will make the final decision on the matter.
On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, after the final session of the District Commissioner Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud shared his opinion with journalists. He emphasized the importance of completing local government elections before the national elections and stated that this is his personal belief. He further clarified that the National Consensus Commission would ultimately decide on this issue.
Criticizing the Awami League’s tenure, Asif Mahmud stressed the need for accountability for the mass killings allegedly carried out by the ruling party across the country.
Regarding the Awami League’s participation in upcoming elections, he mentioned that those party members who were not involved in fascist activities could seek forgiveness and participate in the elections.
In a briefing following the conference, Home Adviser also addressed the pressing issue of corruption, stating that it is the country’s largest problem and must be eradicated to ensure desired progress. He added that instructions have been given to district commissioners to reduce corruption at all levels.
The Home Adviser also highlighted the need for increased security, mentioning the proposal to deploy more Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel in border areas and increase the strength of the Naval Police to enhance security on waterways. He assured that these issues are being taken very seriously.
Regarding law and order, the Home Adviser mentioned that while the situation is satisfactory, there is room for improvement. He noted that the “Operation Devil Hunt” is ongoing to further improve the situation and will continue as long as necessary to address criminal activity.
Liberty News’ national correspondent states that, when asked about the proposal to restrict firearms in police hands and to write Annual Confidential Reports (ACR) for SPs and OCs, the Home Adviser mentioned that discussions on these matters were not held due to limited time.
