Dr. Asif Nazrul, adviser to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Law, Judiciary, and Parliament Affairs, criticized the controversial Waqf law introduced by India’s Hindu nationalist government.

The law, recently passed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, has sparked significant debate. The Waqf law traditionally refers to property donated by Muslims for religious or charitable purposes. However, the amendment proposes to include non-Muslims in the boards that manage these properties, granting the government greater authority over the ownership of land.

On Sunday (April 6), Dr. Asif Nazrul took to Facebook to voice his opposition, accusing the Modi government of taking another step against Muslims. He expressed concerns that the law could lead to the confiscation of historic Muslim properties, including old mosques, and increase government interference.

He also pointed out the hypocrisy, as Hindu temples in India do not allow non-Hindus to manage their committees, questioning why non-Muslims should be included in the Waqf boards. Dr. Nazrul warned that this move would further deepen discrimination and persecution of Muslims and other minority groups in India, adding that these same groups continue to raise false accusations about minority oppression in Bangladesh.
