Interim Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan said on Thursday that he often finishes work at dawn, and when no food is available at home, he goes to Nila Market on 300 Feet Road to eat duck meat. If it is too late and the market is closed, he goes to the Westin Hotel in Gulshan.
Bhuiyan made the remarks at the Secretariat while responding to reporters’ questions about his name being mentioned in a viral video linked to the Gulshan extortion case. The video was recorded by expelled Democratic Students’ Union leader Jane Alam Apu, who claimed he met the adviser in Gulshan on the day of the incident.
“I cannot recall whether I was in that area on that day,” Bhuiyan said, rejecting claims that he was the helmeted man seen in CCTV footage. “If anyone wearing a helmet in a CCTV video is claimed to be me, how credible is that?”
The adviser maintained he had no involvement in the incident, saying, “As far as I know, no one has produced any evidence linking me to this. This is completely politically motivated.” He also alleged that Apu’s recorded statement was obtained under duress at the home of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain — an allegation also made by Apu’s wife, Anisa, during a press conference in Shahbagh earlier in the day.
In the 35-minute video, believed to have been recorded while in hiding, Apu admitted to collecting a bag of money during the extortion and alleged that senior coordinators were involved. The incident, which took place at the home of a former lawmaker in Gulshan, has led to several arrests, with footage and confessions circulating widely on social media.
