A group of masked attackers vandalized and set fire to the home of former Bangladesh Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed in Alipur village, Begumganj, Noakhali, on Thursday night. The assailants also targeted the residence of former Mayor of Chowmuhani Municipality, Akhtar Hossain Faisal, who is the younger brother of retired General Akbar.
The attacks occurred around 9 PM, prompting the army and police to visit the scene. According to locals, over a hundred helmet-wearing individuals stormed the homes of Moeen U Ahmed and his younger brother, Minhaj Ahmed Javed, a former vice president of the Noakhali District Awami League. The attackers vandalized the properties and set fire to the drawing room of Moeen U Ahmed’s house.
At nearly the same time, they also targeted the home of Akhtar Hossain Faisal, a former Chowmuhani Municipality Mayor and ex-president of the local Awami League. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as no one was present in the houses during the attacks.
The incident is believed to be linked to political tensions in Begumganj, where rival factions within the Awami League—one led by local MP Mamunur Rashid Kiron and the other by Akhtar Hossain Faisal—have clashed violently in the past. Previously, MP Kiron had accused Faisal of orchestrating attacks and killings.
While speculation about the perpetrators continues, the Noakhali district chapter of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement denied any involvement, stating that the incident was politically motivated and unrelated to student activism.
Liberty News’ local correspondent states that Begumganj police chief Liton Dewan confirmed the attack, stating that police and army teams have inspected the site, and the situation is now under control.
