Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Susan Ryle met BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka on Thursday, where discussions focused on Bangladesh’s upcoming national election and the importance of political stability.
BNP Standing Committee members Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Organising Secretary Shama Obaid were also present at the meeting.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Amir Khasru said there is no reason to worry about the upcoming election, as voters and political parties alike want a peaceful and disciplined electoral process.
“The BNP is the pioneer of reform initiatives,” Khasru said, referring to the party’s 2030 Vision which includes 31 reform proposals. “Now, what’s important is to move quickly toward holding elections.”
He said discussions with the Australian envoy naturally touched on election matters, noting that the last three to four elections in Bangladesh were marred by irregularities and voter disenfranchisement.
“Young voters — many of whom are now around 30 — have never been able to cast a meaningful vote. People across the country are waiting eagerly for that opportunity,” he added.
Khasru expressed hope that the next election would witness high voter turnout, with people showing enthusiasm at polling stations.
Australia, he said, has expressed its willingness to assist the Election Commission and ensure a free and fair election process in Bangladesh. “Their support in this regard will continue,” he noted.
