The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has instructed that cases be filed against CNG or petrol-powered auto-rickshaw drivers who charge more than the meter fare.

This information was revealed through a letter signed by BRTA’s Director of Engineering, Shitangshu Shekhor Biswas, on Monday (February 10). The letter was addressed to the Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The letter states that cases should be filed against those who charge more than the government-set meter fare for 4-stroke, gas or petrol-powered auto-rickshaws.

It further mentions that, under Section 35(3) of the Road Transport Act 2018, the owner or driver of a contract carriage is obliged to travel to any destination within the route permit area and cannot demand or charge any fare beyond what is shown on the meter. Violation of this provision could lead to a penalty of up to 6 months of imprisonment, a fine of up to 50,000 Taka, or both, and an additional penalty of one point deduction from the driver’s license.

Therefore, the BRTA has requested action to be taken and cases filed against drivers accused of overcharging beyond the government-set meter fare.
