BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said that the Awami League distorted the spirit and history of independence, and eventually turned into a fascist force.

Speaking at a discussion titled “The Rise of Awami Fascism from Logi-Baitha Politics: Perspective of October 28” at the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of Dhaka University on Tuesday afternoon, Rizvi said fascists always create a narrative to confuse the people.

The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) organised the discussion.

Rizvi said, “October 28, 2006, marked the first rise of Awami fascism. The culture of killing through logi and baitha that began on that day under Sheikh Hasina’s instruction laid the foundation for state-wide repression and one-party authoritarianism.”

He compared Sheikh Hasina’s political approach to Adolf Hitler’s propaganda tactics, saying, “Just as Hitler created a narrative of racial superiority, Sheikh Hasina took the state on the path of fascism by distorting the spirit of independence.”

Rizvi alleged that during the Awami regime, the administration, law enforcement agencies and even university campuses were brought under party control. “Whenever a different opinion was expressed, fear and repression followed,” he said.

He further said fascists never act alone but are often supported by intellectuals. “Like Ezra Pound and several writers who joined Hitler’s Young Group during German Nazism, we also see some so-called intellectuals in Bangladesh supporting fascism,” he remarked.

Urging the new generation to be truth seeker, Rizvi said, “We need to know the correct history and learn from the mistakes of the past.”

DUCSU Vice-President Shadik Kayem presided over the discussion, which was conducted by Literature and Cultural Secretary Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad. Members of the families of the martyrs of 28 October 2006 were also present.

The discussants thanked DUCSU for hosting the event, saying, “Dhaka University is the cradle of the nation’s democratic spirit. From here, independent thinking, knowledge cultivation and moral strength must be developed so that no fascist regime can ever rise again.”
