A group of expatriate Bangladeshis, supporters of the Awami League, attempted to harass Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam in New York on Sunday.
The incident took place when the adviser was entering the Bangladesh consulate office to attend a programme there on Sunday evening (local time).
The consulate office organised a programme to mark the first anniversary of the July Uprising, with the adviser attending as the chief guest.
As Mahfuj entered, Awami League activists and supporters staged a protest in front of the consulate office, waving party flags and chanting “Joy Bangla” and “Joy Bangabandhu.”
They hurled eggs at him, shouted slogans against and even smashed the glass door of the consulate building.
In his keynote address, the adviser expressed gratitude for the participation of expatriates in the July Uprising.
“The contribution of expatriates will be mentioned in the July Charter. I am not affiliated with any political party. We want whoever comes to power in the future to govern the country, upholding the spirit of July. The state must be corruption-free and accountable. The country must be prioritised above one’s political ideology. Let us place the nation and its people above all else,” he said.
After his speech, Mahfuj invited open questions. In response to a call for banning Indian television or media in Bangladesh, he replied, “I am not in favour of banning anything. I have always spoken in favour of better alternatives. I am not in favour of banning anything related to the Awami League either.”
Eyewitnesses said that during the event, a group of people waited outside for Mahfuj to come out. Learning of the Awami League activists’ presence, the consulate office called the police.
After midnight local time, under the protection of the New York Police Department, Adviser Mahfuj left the consulate office and he is scheduled to stay there until 27 August as part of his official visit.
