Awami League’s leaflet distribution : Five including BCS officer jailed

According to the announcement of the Awami League, the court has sent five individuals, including Mukib Mia, an officer from the 31st BCS Education Cadre and Assistant Professor in the English Department at Government Jamuddin Kazi Abdul Ghani College in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, and Mukib Mia, the former central General Secretary of the Chhatra League, to jail. They were arrested for distributing leaflets on the streets of Dhaka calling for the resignation of the interim government.

The others sent to jail are: Kapil Haldar Sajal, a member of the central Jubo League; KM Saiful Khan, a member of the Motijheel Thana Jubo League; Sheikh Mohammad Hafiz, a member of the Fatulla Thana Jubo League; and Abdus Salam Lavlu, the vice-president of the banned organization Habiganj District Chhatra League.

Among them, Mukib Mia is an Assistant Professor in the English Department at Government Jamuddin Kazi Abdul Ghani College in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, and an officer from the 31st batch of the BCS Education Cadre.

On Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam’s court rejected their bail applications and ordered their imprisonment.

The defense lawyer for the accused, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, stated that the police presented them in court and requested their detention in jail. During the proceedings, a bail plea was made, but after the hearing, the court ordered their imprisonment.

Earlier, around 2 AM on Monday night, they were arrested by the police from the Mirpur area of the capital. Subsequently, they were shown arrested in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Shahbagh Police Station.

Liberty News’ court correspondent reports that, the allegations in the case state that on the morning of February 1, the accused distributed leaflets in front of the National Press Club, demanding the resignation of the interim government. They used leaflets, slogans, and marches to mobilize the activities of their banned organization, conspired against the government and the state, and spread propaganda aimed at harming the state. They also called for the repeal of the black laws and the lifting of bans through various slogans in front of the public. On the day of the incident, the accused were involved in the organized distribution of leaflets from the banned Chhatra League. Following this, on February 2, the police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Shahbagh Police Station.
