The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) has raised concerns over increasing thefts and attacks on jewelry shops, demanding enhanced security measures. If the situation remains unresolved, the association will announce further actions after April 15.
In a press conference held on Friday, BAJUS called for stronger law enforcement to ensure the safety of jewelry businesses in the country, citing a surge in robberies, thefts, and direct attacks on jewelers.
BAJUS Vice President Riponul Hasan stated that out of 40,000 jewelry establishments in the country, 23 have been targeted by criminals between January and March 2023, with the highest number of incidents in Dhaka. Additionally, robberies occurred in Munshiganj, Sylhet, Comilla, Khulna, and Habiganj.
With the upcoming Eid holidays, jewelers are expressing heightened security concerns. Acting President of BAJUS, Gulzar Ahmed, emphasized the need for both government and individual efforts to protect jewelry businesses. He called on shop owners to install CCTV cameras, increase security personnel, and collaborate with market associations to ensure extra security during Eid.
BAJUS has also called for armed guards at jewelry establishments and swift trials for those involved in robberies. If the security issue is not addressed by April 15, BAJUS will decide on further measures.
