Bangladesh has advanced 16 places in the World Press Freedom Index due to the government’s non-interference in the media, according to Information and Broadcasting Affairs Adviser Mahfuz Alam.
In response to the 2025 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Friday, Adviser Mahfuz Alam stated that the absence of state intervention in media operations played a key role in the country’s significant progress. Bangladesh now ranks 149th among 180 countries, up from 165th in 2024.
Highlighting the interim government’s commitment to media independence, the adviser said, “Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and all other media outlets are now free from government influence. No institution is being pressured by phone calls from authorities.”
He added that various measures have already been taken to ensure the independence and strength of the media, and the country’s improved position in the global index is evidence of the government’s ongoing efforts.
The adviser also mentioned that several reform initiatives will be launched soon, in line with the recommendations of the Media Reform Commission. “I hope Bangladesh will move further up the index next year, with journalists’ rights better protected,” he said.
According to RSF, Bangladesh received a score of 33.71 out of 100 in 2025, an improvement from last year’s 27.64. However, despite this year’s gains, Bangladesh’s overall standing has declined under the Awami League’s rule, falling from 121st place in 2009 to 149th in 2025—a drop of 28 spots over 15 years.
Notably, neighboring India ranked two places below Bangladesh, at 151st in the 2025 index.
