Former MP Prof Mia Golam Parwar – also the Jamaat secretary general expressed his grievances over the recent hike on VAT & customs duties by the incumbent government. The secretary general  said that “prices of essentials are continuously increasing.”

He also stated :

  • ”The government has not been able to take effective measures to contain the price spiral of necessary commodities to lessen the burden on commoners.”
  • “The VAT hike and imposition of fresh duties on more than ten dozen has created an uncomfortable situation for the people of Bangladesh.”
  • “Due to the imposition of duty, people’s daily living expenses would increase by one point.”
  • “Besides, before increasing taxes, the government should have taken into consideration the negative impact on common people’s living conditions. But it seems that the government has not paid attention to the matter at all.”

The secretary general called for the immediate withdrawal of VAT and supplementary duties imposed on hundreds of products so that additional pressure is not created on the lives of common people.

In recent times, even after the fall of the last government, Liberty News has observed that prices of essentials and commodities are still ”hard to reach” for the majority of the masses. This move by the government is expected to further raise the exisiting prices.
