In a significant diplomatic move, Bangladesh has officially sought the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a high-level bilateral meeting between Chief Adviser Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.

The much-anticipated meeting, which lasted over 30 minutes, was described as “constructive and fruitful” by Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, during a briefing on Friday afternoon.

According to Alam, Bangladesh raised several key issues during the talks, including the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, who is reportedly delivering provocative speeches from India. The delegation also expressed concern over recent border killings and emphasized the urgency of resolving long-standing matters such as the equitable sharing of Teesta River water.

“This meeting marks the first direct engagement between Dr. Yunus and Prime Minister Modi since the interim government assumed power,” Alam noted, adding that both sides demonstrated a willingness to strengthen bilateral ties through open dialogue on mutual interests.

The seventh BIMSTEC Summit, bringing together leaders from the Bay of Bengal region, was held in Bangkok from April 2 to 4.
