Bangladesh consolidated their advantage on the third morning in Sylhet, extending their lead to 161 before Mushfiqur Rahim’s dismissal ended a promising partnership with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
At lunch, Bangladesh are at 447/4 with captain Najmul batting at 61 off 69 with 10 fours while Litton Das is unbeaten on 19 off 24.
Earlier in the day, Resuming on 338 for 1, Bangladesh lost overnight batters Mahmudul Hasan Joy (171) and Mominul Haque (82) early to Barry McCarthy, who struck twice with the second new ball.
But Shanto and Mushfiqur steadied the innings with a 79-run stand off 103 balls, rebuilding Bangladesh’s control.
Mushfiqur, playing his 99th Test, looked composed but not entirely fluent during his 52-ball stay before edging a Matthew Humphreys delivery to Andy Balbirnie at gully for 23.
His dismissal left Bangladesh at 425 for 4 in 106 overs.
Shanto, in fine touch, reached his sixth Test fifty off 53 balls with an array of crisp strokes, providing the momentum after early setbacks. He remains unbeaten alongside Litton Das as Bangladesh eye a huge first-innings total to bat Ireland out of the contest.
