The interim government has decided to establish a land-based LNG terminal to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to industries, Press Secretary Shafiqur Alam said on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists in Doha, Press Secretary Shafiqur Alam revealed that the decision aims to address long-standing concerns from investors who have cited gas shortages as a major barrier to setting up factories in Bangladesh.
“Many entrepreneurs have expressed their inability to launch factories due to insufficient gas supply. To address this, we are planning to establish a land-based LNG terminal as soon as possible to facilitate adequate gas imports,” he stated.
Alam added that during Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus’s visit to Doha, discussions took place with QatarEnergy regarding the project. The proposed terminal is expected to significantly enhance gas availability for industrial operations across the country.
Describing the Chief Advisor’s Doha trip as “one of the most successful and engaging visits,” Alam expressed optimism that the visit would bolster Bangladesh’s global reputation and attract increased foreign investment.
Highlighting recent economic improvements, Alam said, “During the previous regime, the country had an external debt of USD 3.2 billion, which has now been reduced to USD 600 million under the interim government. The remaining amount will be cleared within the next few months.”
He concluded by saying this progress sends a strong positive signal to the global community that Bangladesh is open and ready for business.
