The U.S. administration under President Donald Trump has taken a tough stance on illegal immigration. After the recent crackdown, the U.S. is considering sending illegal immigrants, including Bangladeshis to the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba.
Following the U.S. administration’s aggressive approach toward illegal immigration since Trump’s presidency, a significant number of immigrants have been arrested and sent back to their home countries. However, there are new plans to impose harsher punishment by sending some of these individuals to Guantanamo Bay rather than deporting them. The countries of origin for those on this list include Venezuela, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
As per a report from Reuters on Monday, March 3, some detainees who were residing illegally in the U.S. may not be deported to their respective countries but instead could face imprisonment in the Guantanamo Bay prison. These individuals are currently being held in various jails across Texas, Arizona, and Virginia. While the final decision for their deportation has been made, they are now at risk of being transferred to Guantanamo Bay instead.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed a petition in court against this plan. The petition, filed on Saturday, highlights the case of 10 immigrants who may be sent to Guantanamo Bay. The petitioners argue that the conditions in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp are extremely harsh, with a high rate of suicide attempts among detainees. They further claim that this move would violate U.S. immigration law, seeking a prompt legal remedy for these individuals.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen commented on the matter, confirming that the worst offenders, the “worst of the worst” illegal immigrants, would be sent to Guantanamo Bay. However, based on her department’s records, about a third of the 177 Venezuelan nationals initially targeted for Guantanamo detention have no criminal background.
Tricia McLaughlin, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, stated that the deportation plans for illegal immigrants had been previously declared. She dismissed the ACLU’s concerns as baseless and assured that the government would take appropriate measures in consultation with the judicial authorities.
Liberty News’ international correspondent states that this latest move comes as part of President Trump’s broader crackdown on illegal immigration, which he promised during his second term. In late February, he escalated his efforts by instructing immigration agents to find and deport immigrant children who had entered the U.S. without their parents. This is seen as an extension of his aggressive deportation strategy.
