Bangladeshi journalism at a crossroads

Liberty News Desk

Journalism in Bangladesh is going through a strange time. The polished newsrooms of Dhaka deliver us news every day, but how true are those reports? That question lingers in almost everyone’s mind now. In reality, it is the grassroots reporters—the journalists from towns and rural corners of the country—who tirelessly bring us the real stories of people’s struggles, joys, and the ground realities. This is exactly what the eighteen thousand members of the Bangladesh Mofossol Sangbadik Forum (BMSF) are doing, day after day.

I say it with pride—whether in TV talk shows, open platforms on social media, or the fields and villages of the country—it is BMSF’s journalists who bring authentic news to the people. No other medium can do it with such speed and sincerity.

Yet, a certain frustration remains. The big national dailies and satellite TV channels often do not want to, or cannot, show the truth. We saw clear evidence of this on July 30th. On that day, BMSF held its 14th founding anniversary and general meeting at the National Press Club, where thousands of journalists from across the country gathered. And yet, despite receiving invitations in advance, no journalist from mainstream print or television attended. Why? Perhaps because our unity and strength make them uncomfortable. Perhaps due to unwritten directives, the event was deliberately ignored.

So, the question is—will we just endure this neglect? Or will we carve our own path with our own strength? I firmly believe that if our eighteen thousand families stand together, we can very easily establish a first-class daily newspaper and even a satellite TV channel. It wouldn’t take long—within just one year, this dream can become reality.

Our greatest asset is our unity and leadership. With experienced figures like journalist Abu Jafar leading the way, we stand together as one. Our vision is not limited to building a newspaper or a television channel—it is about establishing a powerful media group that will guide the next generation on the path of truth.

We must leave something behind for our children—something they can trust and rely on. This is not just about dreaming, but about taking real steps. The unity of grassroots journalists can be the beacon of tomorrow.

We have strength, we have determination. That is why I say—unity is power. United journalists can, and will, make it happen. Insha’Allah, we will succeed.
