Bangladeshi peacekeepers stationed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are safe, despite the intensifying conflict in the region, confirmed the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Monday. According to an ISPR statement, “All Bangladeshi peacekeepers in DRC are secure, and there has been no disruption in communication with them, even as violence continues in the area.”
Bangladesh has long been a key contributor to United Nations peacekeeping missions, and its forces are actively involved in DRC’s peace efforts, playing a vital role in promoting global stability. The conflict in eastern Congo has escalated rapidly in recent weeks, with rebel groups capturing strategic towns and advancing toward Goma, the government’s last major stronghold near the Rwandan border, reports AP.
The M23 rebel group, reportedly backed by Rwanda, has overwhelmed local healthcare facilities, with hospitals overwhelmed by a surge of wounded civilians trapped in the crossfire. Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes, worsening the already dire humanitarian crisis and raising concerns of a potential regional war.
Liberty News’ international correspondent reports that despite these tensions, Bangladesh’s peacekeepers continue to uphold their mission in the region, helping to maintain peace and order in a time of increasing instability.
