Bangladeshi students studying at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in India held a solemn candlelight vigil and observed a moment of silence to pay tribute to the victims of a recent plane crash involving a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft. The tragic incident claimed the lives of several individuals, including a student of Dhaka’s Milestone College.
The memorial event took place on Monday evening at the university’s central grounds, where over fifty Bangladeshi students gathered to express their grief and solidarity.
During the vigil, participants prayed for the departed souls and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Speakers emphasized the deep sorrow felt by the nation, noting that the incident shattered the dreams of countless families. “The children who were expected to return to their mothers’ embrace in the evening were lost in a sudden, devastating accident,” said one attendee.
Sudip Chandra Halder, a PhD researcher and literary scholar at BHU, addressed the gathering and stated:
“When these innocent lives, as delicate as blossoms, were dreaming of playtime in the afternoon, a cruel tragedy extinguished their light. The mothers who waited to embrace their children are now plunged into an ocean of eternal separation. This is not just a family tragedy—it is a national mourning. We have come here out of humanity, driven by our conscience, to pray for peace for these young souls.”
The students demanded a fair and transparent investigation into the incident and urged the government to ensure proper medical care for those injured.
Notable participants at the vigil included Tanvir Mahatab Ayon, Amit Saha, Sufal Roy, Kazi Sajjad, Shubho Saha, Ananya Sarkar, Brishti Sen, Arpita Roy, Abhijit Saha, Chayon Roy, Sanjay Kumar Roy, Gautam Roy, Partha Pratim Roy Pranto, Ishwar Gupta, Arfanul Haque Sajan, Ritwik Debnath, Anindya Narayan De, Ashik Ayon, Russel Pradhan, Sajal Kumar Sarkar, Tanmoy Sen Topu, Rudro Majumdar, Samapto Sarkar, and Jannatul Mim, among others.
The event concluded with a one-minute silence in memory of the departed. The students expressed that even though they are far from home, they are united in grief with their homeland. “Our hearts are in Bangladesh. We, too, cry in silence,” said one participant.
