Akram Hossain, a 25-year-old youth from Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria, has been killed in the Russia-Ukraine war while fighting as a contract soldier for the Russian military.
A young man from Hossainpur village under Lalpur union in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria has died while participating in the Russia-Ukraine war on behalf of Russia. The deceased was identified as Akram Hossain, son of Morshed Mia.
Family sources confirmed they received the news of his death on Thursday, 18 April. Akram had gone to Russia about a year ago in search of better financial prospects. Initially, he worked for a Chinese company but reportedly left the job due to poor wages and broker-related deception. He later joined the Russian military as a contract fighter approximately two and a half months ago.
“He even posted a photo of himself in a Russian military uniform on Facebook,” said a family member.
Mobina Begum, the grieving mother of Akram, said, “We pleaded with him not to go to war, but he insisted there was no way for him to return to Bangladesh. Since April 13, we had not been able to contact him. On Thursday, one of his acquaintances informed us that Akram was killed in a missile strike by Ukraine.”
His father, Morshed Mia, echoed her statement, adding, “During our last conversation on 13 April, he told us the situation was worsening, and there was no scope for him to come back.”
Ashuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Raffey Mohammad Chhrha confirmed the incident and said steps will be taken to repatriate Akram’s body in coordination with the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
