British American Tobacco (BAT) Bangladesh will shut down its Dhaka factory from 1 July, the company announced in a disclosure to the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). It will also relocate its registered office from Mohakhali to Ashulia, following a legal order.
The decision comes after the Supreme Court rejected BAT Bangladesh’s appeal to extend its lease for the Mohakhali premises. The Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, upheld a previous High Court verdict in favour of the Dhaka Cantonment Board, which had declined to renew the lease.
BAT Bangladesh, one of the leading multinational tobacco companies in the country, had earlier challenged the board’s decision through a writ petition, which was dismissed by the High Court in December 2023.
