DNCC Administrator Mohammad Eajaz has announced that battery-powered and unauthorized rickshaws will no longer be allowed to operate on Dhaka’s main roads to ensure safety and restore traffic discipline.
While conducting a joint operation with Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in Asad Gate on Tuesday, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Eajaz stated that all rickshaws must operate only on internal streets. He emphasized that illegal battery rickshaws are linked to 20% of city accidents, disproportionately affecting women and children due to their lack of safety standards and erratic movement.
To curb these issues, the government is shutting down unauthorized charging stations and workshops with the help of DESCO. Eajaz also revealed that BUET has designed a safer model of battery rickshaw, which selected companies have been authorized to manufacture.
The DNCC will begin training rickshaw drivers this month. Only those who complete the training and pass the assessment will receive valid licenses, and they must use DNCC-approved rickshaws restricted to specific zones. Cross-zone movement will not be allowed, and fare systems will be regulated to reduce passenger inconvenience.
Eajaz added that each National ID will be eligible for only one rickshaw license to eliminate black-market trade in licenses. During the joint crackdown on Tuesday, authorities seized around 30 battery-powered rickshaws operating on restricted roads.
Senior officials from DNCC Region-5, DMP, and the Traffic Engineering Circle were also present during the drive.
