Following a report by the Times of India suggesting a possible cancellation of the upcoming bilateral series between Bangladesh and India, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has clarified that no such discussions have taken place and preparations for the August series are underway.
Amid escalating political tensions in South Asia, a report by the Times of India claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may cancel the scheduled Bangladesh tour in August, citing strained diplomatic sentiments triggered by controversial remarks from a former Bangladeshi official.
Responding to the report, BCB’s Chairman of Cricket Operations, Nazmul Abedin Fahim, told the Liberty News, “There has been no discussion regarding the cancellation of the series. In fact, we continue to share a friendly and respectful relationship with BCCI, and preparations for the series are in full swing.”
The speculation arose after A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman, former head of the BDR massacre investigation commission, suggested in a social media post that Bangladesh should consider military collaboration with China to occupy India’s northeastern states if war breaks out between India and Pakistan. Though the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry swiftly distanced itself from Rahman’s views, the post stirred controversy across the border.
Despite the uproar, BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury Sujon emphasized, “This series is part of the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP), and both cricket boards have already agreed to it. There’s no indication from BCCI suggesting any cancellation.”
The Times of India report also hinted at uncertainty surrounding the 2025 Asia Cup, scheduled for September in India, amid rising India-Pakistan tensions. The possibility of a no-show by either side could jeopardize the tournament’s viability, the report added.
For now, BCB remains confident that both the bilateral series and the Asia Cup will proceed as planned, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining sports diplomacy despite regional complexities.
