Hannan Sarkar, who became a member of the Bangladesh national team’s selection panel last year, has stepped down from the position before completing even one year. He had previously done a commendable job as a selector for age-group teams, which led to his appointment in the national team selection panel. His tenure was meant to last for two years under Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu’s committee.
On Saturday, Hannan submitted his resignation letter to BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Nazmul Abedin Fahim. BCB sources say he is leaving with a one-month notice and has stated that he wants to dedicate time to coaching.
Hannan had been appointed with a salary of 1.25 lakh taka, but he had been dissatisfied with the pay from the beginning. This dissatisfaction is the reason behind his decision to resign.
Speaking to a newspaper, Hannan said, “I believe the position of selector is very prestigious, but the reality is that it doesn’t provide financial stability. First, the salary is low, and second, it’s a contract-based appointment. In such a job, a higher salary would have been acceptable. If the job had a two- or three-year tenure, there would have been savings. Now it’s just living from hand to mouth. Coaching offers better prospects for the future. Mohammad Salahuddin bhai has been our guide, and I hope he will become the national team’s head coach. If we perform well, we may one day get the chance to work with the national team. I would like to stay as a coach if BCB offers a respectable salary.”
Liberty News’ cricket correspondent reports that the two major leagues in the country, BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) and Dhaka Premier League, provide the biggest opportunities for coaches. There is significant earning potential for coaches in these leagues. Additionally, BCB also offers opportunities for coaches, and there are no obstacles in working in both the BPL/DPL and BCB. Hannan is now heading in that direction.
