The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is moving swiftly to finalise sanctions related to fixing allegations ahead of the players’ draft for the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season.
On Thursday, the BCB held a familiarization session with all franchises interested in participating in this year’s BPL. Speaking to the media after the event, BCB Vice President Shakhawat Hossain emphasised the board’s commitment to timely action.
“We want to receive the final report before the drafting. There’s a timeline. We want it in hand before the draft, so that implementation can start from this year’s BPL,” he said.
Iftekhar Rahman Mithu, Member Secretary of the BPL Governing Council, reinforced the urgency: “If we get the documents, their names won’t be in the draft.”
However, BCB Director and Cricket Operations Chairman Nazmul Abedeen Fahim stressed that proper procedure must be followed.
“Until it’s proven, we can’t take any action. The moment it reaches us, it will become effective immediately. That might happen three days later, or even after the BPL starts, or before the draft,” he explained.
The BCB’s Independent Inquiry Committee, tasked with investigating integrity issues and alleged corruption in the BPL, submitted its final report to BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul on Tuesday. The three-member panel — Justice Mirza Hussain Haider, Shakil Kasem, and Dr Khaled H. Chowdhury — conducted the inquiry with support from the BCB Anti-Corruption Unit.
Although the board has confirmed receipt of the nearly 900-page report, its findings will not be made public. The report has been handed to Alex Marshall, head of the BCB Integrity Unit, who will review the evidence, frame charges against implicated individuals, and recommend sanctions.
Meanwhile, former BPL franchise Chittagong Kings, owned by SQ Sports Enterprise Limited, has accused the BCB of contempt of court for not being invited to Thursday’s familiarization session.
