Bangladesh’s cricket board on Monday won a legal reprieve after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed a High Court order that had suspended the nomination of councilors for its upcoming board elections.
The dispute began when A.B.M. Monjurul Alam Dulal and several others filed a writ petition challenging a September 18 letter issued by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The letter had named councilors from divisional and district sports associations, a key step in forming the BCB General Council and holding the 2025 Board of Directors election.
Earlier, the High Court had issued a rule and temporarily stayed the operation of the BCB letter. The government appealed the ruling through a Civil Miscellaneous Petition (CMP).
On Monday, a judge in the Chamber of the Appellate Division heard the appeal and stayed the High Court order, effectively allowing the nomination process to continue.
In a press release, the BCB welcomed the ruling, saying it “ensures that the election process can move forward without interruption” and reaffirmed its commitment to holding the polls “in a fair, transparent and timely manner.”
The BCB elections scheduled on 6th October, which are expected to be highly contested, will determine the new Board of Directors and set the leadership for the next term.
